Without Focus, No Job!

headless chickenThe more I spend time with job seekers and career changers, the more I realize that the most important thing in your career is not your CV, neither your network…but to be focused.

A lot of people want to be everything to everybody, “I am looking for a job in that industry but as well I want to do things in this industry as well…”. They want to keep all options opened, so they try a little of everything. But it does not work.

As long as you want to be a project manager (it is the worst word in the world, it means everything and nothing) in any industry, you won’t be able to find anything.

Find a niche, find an industry that suits you, find your market, find something specific.

But stop wasting your time by targeting 2/3 different industries, by putting your CV all around the world.

Once you find your niche, start digging. You dig through your connections, your network.

Once you know where you want to go, you can choose accordingly the best strategy.

Which social network to use?

Which bio to make?

Which conference to attend?

Which people to target?

Which CV to do?

Whatever you do, it is all about focusing. And all the marketing tools (CV, cover letter, networking…) are useless if you don’t have a focus.

So what, you are still sending CVs to different industries, you have not thought about your target…you send mails without address. Good luck, these mails won’t get through!
