A Job You Love

When it’s about career and job, it only matters when we lose our job or reach a point where we can’t stand our job anymore, we are stuck in a rut.
So career and job become important only in time of transition, in time of crisis.

But the rest of time, nothing!!
And to quote John Lees who precisely wrote a book “How to get a job you’ll love”:

“Most people spend more time planning a car purchase, one annual holiday or their new kitchen than they do thinking about their career”. In other words you will spend almost all your grown-up time in a job, in a career you never really took the time to think about it!!!!

Instead of spending 2 hours last Saturday to think about your new car, why couldn’t you take 1 hour thinking about your career?
It seems completely a nonsense. But it’s true.
We don’t know how to take a step back: “Ok, what am I doing…and Why?”. We just switch from a job to another with no good idea of where we are heading.

When I was a recruitment consultant, I could call different candidates to offer them a potential position, and many of them were saying: “Ah yeah, the pay is good, let’s go ahead”. They did not take the time to see if it would fit in their career and they were ready to take the first opportunity showing up, switching from opportunities to opportunities. I am not saying it is not good to be an opportunist, I am just saying it is good to take control of your career by taking conscious decisions.

So the goal of this blog is to help you to think about your career/job:

-  Am I Happy?

-  Is my job meaningful?

- Will I do this job for the next 20 years?

- If I win 10 million pounds, Will I keep on doing the same job?

The second goal is to give you some tips, help, advice, ideas, energy to achieve this transition.
I want this blog to be resourceful to you, and will invite people to talk on the blog, I will carry out CV reviews, give advice on which books I loved, will provide you with my ideas and tips about the basics of career transition (CV writing, networking…). I want this blog to be a career advice blog.

And YES, your career and your job are important. It is an 8 hour activity every day, 5 days a week for 40 years (and even more). So don’t forget to grant some time for that activity.

[...] In a post, I explained how I felt surprised that people spend much more time in activities such as these ones whereas they don’t even think about their career, they only react to a job loss or a difficult situation. [...]
