I thank headhunters for boosting my clients mood!

thank-youSomeone I know was contacted by a headhunter the other day…She was not interested in the position at all.

But she realized that it gave her a boost in self-confidence….yes she became aware that she is desirable on the job market and that some people try to reach her.

So what?

Generally speaking recruitment agents waste people’s time with positions that don’t fit or are inadequate. And sometimes even if you don’t fit in the position or you are not really interested they will try to make you fit. You think it is … Continue Reading

The last dinosaur: the cover letter

dinosaur

Let’s face it: in 2 years as a Recruiter, I never read a cover letter.

And you know what? My colleagues did not either.

Ah sorry actually I read one cover letter because I found the CV funny…

I do remember in 1998, when I was looking for a job, I used to spend hours and hours crafting a very good cover letter for each job I was applying for. If I could send 4-5 cover letters a day, it was a good day.

You know what, when I have clients using the same … Continue Reading

What the handball of Thierry Henry teaches us…

thierry henry handballI am French so I am a fanatic supporter of France but what happened on Wednesday can teach us a lot.

Yes Thierry Henry made a handball, and yes it was on purpose.

On the short term, France fans are happy because their team is going to be in the world cup. French players, French broadcasters…almost everybody in France says: “sorry for that but at least we qualified”.

I think the handball of Thierry Henry is a short term solution. On one hand it pleases everybody and qualifies a … Continue Reading

Do you bother to connect on linkedin with a personal message?

linkedin-logoAlmost every day now, I receive requests for connections on linkedin. I think  linkedin is a wonderful tool…but people don’t respect some basic rules.

Actually these are common rules. When you meet someone at a networking venue, do you say “I would like to connect with you?”. You start a proper conversation, and explain why you want to connect with her.

On linkedin it is exactly the same, 90% of the time I receive that: “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn” (or in French as now there … Continue Reading

Your CV is the roof of your house

house1When people come to me the 1st thing they ask is: “Here is my CV/Resume, what can you do? Can you change it?”

Like in a house, you don’t start building a house with a roof, but you start with the foundations.

So 1st thing 1st is to resist to the immediate expectation of the client…”no we won’t work on your CV right now”.

That’s the moment you need to explain why.

So why your CV is the roof of your house?

Because before doing anything we need to understand who you are (values, passions) … Continue Reading

Did you know… that the world is changing?

Did you know that the top 10 In-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004?

Did you know that today’s learner will have 10-14 jobs by the age of 38?

Did you know that 1 out of 8 couples married in the US last year met OnLine (and I know a couple of them in France!!)?

Jobs, careers are changing and we, as career consultants, we need to adapt to these changes to be able to help our clients better, to give them the best of the market…Now you need to use social media, it allows you to speed up the process … Continue Reading

Why career advice has become so boring?

Clones

I have been using google reader to get all the news about my industry especially career advice and everything related to job search.

But with the time passing, I realize that career advice is completely boring and not creative…every single day, I read loads of advice and tips:

“5 tips to write your cv”

“the 7 tips to win an interview”

“How to use linkedin to find a job”

And so on…(I hate lenghty listings like the “15 ways” with 15 bullet points)

So I started to simply unsubscribe to a great deal of blogs with … Continue Reading
