The 7 phases of the job search

When you look for a job, you go through a 7 step process. It is comparable to the loss of someone when you go through 5 phases.

And consistently, I have seen people going through theses steps if they do it alone…

  • 1st phase = after losing your job, you jump straight away to send a couple of CVs without having your CV really ready, the 1st negative replies come in.
  • 2nd phase = In this phase, as you are a new job seeker (you have looked for … Continue Reading

Is Outplacement dying?

Outplacement is the service which consists in helping people to achieve a career transition (looking for a job or changing of job).

I must say that this title is obviously provocative…but at the same time, the industry is facing new challenges that really question its foundations.

Is Outplacement working for career changers?

Outplacement has been questioned for a long time about its efficiency in helping true career changers.

Herminia Ibarra explains in “Working Identity” that career changers change in a lengthy process where they meet with people on their target market, where … Continue Reading

Feedback is everything

Feedback is everything.

With a feedback, you can improve yourself, you can get better at something much quicker than if you would do it alone.

With a feedback, you can also understand how people see you, and how you come across, or even what kind of skills/qualities people think you have.

For example, to prepare for interviews, getting feedbacks while doing mock interviews is priceless.

And after the interview, getting feedback from the recruiter is another way to improve.

Feedback not only helps you to correct your mistakes but also to reinforce your … Continue Reading

Giving is the new way of finding a job!

givingGiving information for free helps to show your skills and knowledge.

Why do you think I am doing this every week?!

Do you know that the word Sell comes from the old saxon Sellan which means giving!

To find a job, the more you give, the more you receive. I am not saying that you should give with the only goal of receiving, I am only saying that giving is the best job search strategy.

You apply your skills, you show that you are still of some use, you help people which boosts your … Continue Reading

Interview 3.0

3.0 (2)When being interviewed, rules are increaslingly changing. It is not about what you have done, but about how you have done it.

Welcome in the world of the interview 3.0.

With the interview 3.0, the rule is simple: Prove it!

There are more candidates, there is more competition, recruiters have access to more information on-line about the candidates…they don’t know what the truth is.

So recruiters rely more and more on behavioral techniques to get as many details as possible about the candidate. They want to unearth the lies or … Continue Reading

Are you short term or long term?

PICT0002People, generally speaking when they are out of a job, want a job right now. This is a short term solution.

When I come with my strategy which implies to stop hiding behind a screen and start developing people’s network, there is a lot of resistance. People don’t see the immediate result. This is a mid/long term solution.

Sending your CV all over the world. Short term solution.

Re connecting with your ex colleagues and bosses. Long term solution (which can turn in a short term solution if they know someone who…).

Developing your … Continue Reading

Do you look for a job like in the 70s?

The 70sDo you still use a Cover letter and a CV (or Resume)? Do you still use the network of your close friends and only the network of your close friends?

Guess what, you look for a job like in the 70s!

My dad is 60 this year, and just retired from his company after almost 40 years of good work. He started working there in 1971.

When he arrived in my city, he only knew my mother and had no contact at all. But at the time, he had a GSCE … Continue Reading

A new way of looking for a job

DSCF1060

The other day I got an email from Andrei Parakhnevitch, here it is:

“I have applied your recommendations to my current situation.
Here are some results:
- focusing on the industry / sector I am experienced in (maximum 5 tailored files sent per day) – I don’t know whether you’ve heard about a student who had sent 800! CVs and couldn’t get a job before he broadcasted his case on the BFM radio;
- networking by using alumni contacts from ESCP and joining Groups on LinkedIn;
- not posting “looking for a job” on the … Continue Reading

I have been dumped by a recruiter

DumpedA couple of months ago, I lost a big project with a client. I was really gutted and wanted to get some work quickly. The day after I received a phone call from a recruiter: a company is looking to recruit a recruitment manager. I thought it would be a good idea to have different income streams. So I went to the interview to see what it was about.

The company is in the gaming industry (called W) and they were offering very good compensations. So I decided to proceed and … Continue Reading

The failure of Business schools and Universities

dunce

I am always amazed that recent graduates don’t know how to look for a job! (I still receive emails from graduates asking for a job!)

This article of Chris Russell made me think of the lack of job search courses at universities and business schools.

Imagine that universities spend 90% of their time (and money) to teach their students technical skills and technical courses but when these same students go out to look for a job, they don’t know some basic rules. They are unprepared and struggle to find a job…

Basically … Continue Reading

Recruiters don’t look for desperate people

desperateWhen writing this title for the post, I realized that it was a bit harsh but so true at the same time.

I mean it, it is unfortunate but true. My article, Don’t put “Looking for a job” on your linkedin status embraced exactly the same idea. I understand all the reactions I got on linkedin but I am trying to explain why this tip is valuable…

I still think that it is not an efficient way of looking for a job especially in the long run. For recruiters you have … Continue Reading

Without Focus, No Job!

headless chickenThe more I spend time with job seekers and career changers, the more I realize that the most important thing in your career is not your CV, neither your network…but to be focused.

A lot of people want to be everything to everybody, “I am looking for a job in that industry but as well I want to do things in this industry as well…”. They want to keep all options opened, so they try a little of everything. But it does not work.

As long as you want to … Continue Reading

Don’t put “Looking for a job” on your linkedin status

looking for a jobI see many people updating their status with “Looking for a job” or “Looking for new opportunities”

But do you think you make the most out of Linkedin? Do you think it is going to attract recruiters?

I think it is not the best thing to do for your reputation or your personal brand.

Why?

Because you position yourself as someone asking for something, asking for a job, waiting for things to happen, you are being passive!

Instead you could put on your linkedin status that you attended a … Continue Reading

I thank headhunters for boosting my clients mood!

thank-youSomeone I know was contacted by a headhunter the other day…She was not interested in the position at all.

But she realized that it gave her a boost in self-confidence….yes she became aware that she is desirable on the job market and that some people try to reach her.

So what?

Generally speaking recruitment agents waste people’s time with positions that don’t fit or are inadequate. And sometimes even if you don’t fit in the position or you are not really interested they will try to make you fit. You think it is … Continue Reading
